Engineering School Bans Internet to Promote Social Activity

Newspaper current event by tomtolman on 13 March 2007, tagged as internetnetworking

Past studies have shown that online activity enhances social contact rather than promoting isolation. The dean at one of India’s top engineering schools, The Institute of Technology in Mumbia, disagrees. The school has banned Internet access in campus housing from 11 PM to 12:30 PM in an effort to increase social activity. "Now, a student doesn't even know who lives two doors away from him because he is so busy on the Internet," said Prakash Gopalan, dean of student affairs. They blame Internet activity to a rise in depression, dysfunctional lifestyles, suicide, and a lack of participation in sporting, cultural and sporting events.
