Electronic Contacts, More Than Meets the Eye

Newspaper current event by VnutZ on 11 February 2008, tagged as optics, vision, technology, and gadgets

Contact lenses are small pieces of shaped film that provide focus correction for the human eye. "Fashionable lenses" aside, contacts have only provided the simple function of sight. New research in flexible electronics, however, permits circuitry and lighting to be directly embedded onto contact lenses. The system is yet in a trial phase with rabbits to ensure no damage is inflicted upon the eye, but the future application of such technology could allow for digital enhancement of a scene or an information overlay. Or, given pop culture, a future of weird blinking-light-eye effects may become the newest "must have" accessory.
