Earth Hour 2008 transpired last night with the participation of major cities across the planet in dimming the lights on cultural icons for one hour. Earth Hour is intended to make a statement that participants are committed to finding alternatives not only to the energy sources used, but to the necessity of energy use. While certainly a noble enterprise, I fail to see the action as a sign of commitment when performed at a time most people are asleep. An Earth Hour during the time of business would be a statement of global commitment.
For Earth Hour 2009 everbody must suddenly simultaneously turn on everything electrical at 1800 hrs GMT/Zulu and blow the grid through the ionosphere. This will accomplish two important goals,
1) In process it demonstrates to algae-burning energy utilities what happens when they listen to Enviro-whiners rather than to engineers, and
2) Post-process it demonstrates to everybody else what happens when they listen to Enviro-whiners.
How many high efficiency compact fluorescent bulbs should Uncle Al buy to offset one million Mexicans illegally entering California each year, then reproducing?

Most people are asleep from 8 to 9 PM local time?
I would say sitting around in the dark for an hour sends a pretty potent message... I'm not sure what that message is, though.
