The photography industry is already driving deeper into the digital age in 2006. Nikon announced last week that they would '[discontinue] production of all large format Nikkor lenses and enlarging lenses, as well as several of our film camera bodies, manual focus Nikkor interchangeable lenses and related accessories.' It is important to note, however, that contrary to claims that these changes result in Nikon going 'completely digital,' the same press release noted that 'Nikon's film camera business will continue with our flagship model F6(TM) and with the FM10(TM), allowing the Nikon brand to continue serving the two strongest segments of the 35mm film camera market.'
More recently, Konica Minolta announced their withdrawal from the camera and photo business, citing difficulties providing competitive products 'in today’s era of digital cameras.' Instead, the Japanese company plans to concentrate on 'products such as colour office photocopiers and medical imaging equipment.' The digital segment of the discontinued business will be sold to Sony.
