Da Vinci Code Under Attack

Newspaper

current event by willwaddell on 20 March 2005, tagged as literarycritiques

Though without formal sanction the Cardinal Archbishop of Genoa has recently condemned Dan Brown’s book The Da Vinci Code as “cheap lies.” This response comes as the result of the book’s immense popularity coupled with its claims that the secret bloodline of Jesus Christ was suppressed by the Catholic Church. The book has sold some 20 million copies thus far.

Unbeknownst to many, Dan Brown is not the first to make these assertions. The book Holy Blood, Holy Grail ,first published in 1982, argued along the same lines and was used by Dan Brown to formulate some of The Da Vinci Code plot points. Holy Blood, Holy Grail, though popular, was dismissed by the academic community as specious history.

I've never read the book, but reading about The Da Vinci Code on Wikipedia, it seems that most of the conspiracies forwarded have been debunked. Some of the information I read, however, brought up a couple of religious questions I was hoping someone could help me with.

First, there was mention that Catholics believe Mary (mother of Jesus) to be without sin. Does this mean they believe all of her sins have been forgiven, or that she never sinned in the first place?

Second, in response to Brown's claim that Jesus married Mary Magdaline, it seemed clear that Catholics do not believe it possible that Christ married or had children at all. Is this a belief held in Protestant churches as well?
