Cruising Antarctica

Newspaper current event by markmcb on 20 June 2005, tagged as mechanics

James Moon, in conjuntion with the British Antarctic Survey, unveiled a concept design for travel in one of Earth's most remote and extreme locations - Antarctica. The design was presented at the Royal College of Art's final year show. With its wheel and track system, James believes the vehicle is capable of tackling most any amount of snow and ice.

James talked about some of the technology that will help the vehicle to travel at increased speeds. He stated, 'I’m particularly interested in overcoming the dangers of travelling across crevassed areas of ice. Unknown terrain limits the speed of any journey over the ice - the faster you can detect crevasses the quicker you can travel.'

A device that travels 30 meters in front of the vehicle following a GPS path is used to search out dangerous terrain and alert the 2-man crew before it's too late. James thinks this technology, once adapted, will be useful for exploration of other planets as well.

If he can find an investor to get a prototype built, the result could be historic. I'm afraid I can't help him. Well, I probably could buy him lunch. Any takers out there?
