Crime Detection Software Added to Operation Virtual Shield

Newspaper

current event by gnifyus on 27 September 2007, tagged as surveillance, crime, and technology

In the last few years, the city of Chicago has been gradually implementing a network of surveillance cameras under the project name "Operation Virtual Shield." Recently, IBM and strategic partners Firetide and Genetec have put forth a plan that includes several phases. The first step was in actually setting up and connecting the cameras, including monitoring and storing the video. The newest development under way implements software analytics that will purportedly read the video real-time and recognize "suspicious behavior," even detecting a mysterious package placed in a park, or a car or truck parked in an odd place. Needless to say, some are drawing Orwellian analogies with this newest surveillance technology research.
