Covert Ring Tones

Newspaper

current event by atroon on 14 June 2006, tagged as technology

Technology is generally defined as the new application of an existing object or principle, and a group of teens in England found a perfect use for a technology that was meant to repel them.

Compound Security actively markets a device that's touted to keep teens from loitering in front of your shop, without affecting adult patrons, most of whom cannot hear the 17kHz tone. Students in the US have noted the development on the Web and have downloaded the tone for use as a ring tone on mobile phones. It's not a perfect solution since some teachers have either above-average hearing or they are still young enough to hear the tones. However, Compound Security's marketing director and the inventor of the original product, showing a fine sense of 'if you can't beat them, join them' is now marketing the authentic Mosquito Ringtone on fork.com in the US and by SMS message in the UK.
