The United States is usually singled out as the single greatest polluter in the world, but studies show that China is now the world's leading polluter. Not only is China leading in pollution, but researchers believe the computer models in use underestimate the nation's future increase in pollution. China and the UN argue that richer nations, those with a wealthier per capita, must cut back pollution first as per the Kyoto Protocol. While countries like the United States have a higher per capita, perhaps the reckless industrialization by developing nations will finally be recognized for what it is.

If we all really really cared... by Anonymous :: NR0 :: on 16 April 2008
...we would probably stop buying products from environmentally reckless factories; oil from reckless nations; etc. etc. (like this were at all remotely feasible)
... at the same time, I can see why China and India feel like they are getting the shorter end: after all, the American Dream has always been 2-3 cars per family plus a mega house in the suburbs. And the United States got there by pretty much polluting the hell out of its own rivers, air, soil. Which was OK, because in the 70's we started to actually do something about it. And it was also OK because no one else did it at scale. The problems began when the REST of the world wanted a piece of that American Dream and had the means to get there.
