Building a PC Cheaply

Newspaper

current event by markmcb on 25 February 2005, tagged as doityourself

If you're in the market for a new desktop, but are hesitating because of prices, consider building your own. There are several sites like Build-Your-Own-Computer-Tips that lay out a step-by-step guide with tons of pictures to alieviate any ambiguity. Couple this with pages that offer up-to-the-minute prices and you could easily assemble a new personal desktop for under $200 or a simple file server for under $100. Granted, by doing this you forego any sort of warranty on the computer as a whole, but between the money saved and individual parts warranties, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

Is it worth it? by Anonymous :: NR0

I'm just wondering if it's worth the time and hassle. Even the typical expensive computer companies like Apple are now offering sub-$500 computers. I understand that's 300 extra dollars, but that comes with the OS software, a warranty, and the piece of mind knowing that if it's broke out of the box, I can just take it back and get a new one.

It just seems to me that if you actually need a computer now, you are rolling the dice putting a system together yourself.
