Senior police officers in Britain are beginning to speak out against the growing use of CCTV surveillance cameras around the country, even in villages with typically low crime rates. The deputy chief constable of Hampshire, Ian Redhead is quoted as saying, "If it's in our villages, are we really moving towards an Orwellian situation where cameras are at every street corner? I really don't think that's the kind of country that I want to live in."
To add to the continuing British civil liberties debate, there has also been a recent extension in the use of a talking camera that can sternly admonish people on the street for such antisocial behavior as littering, fighting, vandalism and other common offenses.

Smile, you're on not so candid camera! by djofraleigh :: NR0 :: Show
Most people want to be on camera
and all people want to feel safe.
I feel safer with the cameras going
but others fear the cameras themselves.
There would be less nose picking
but there would be more showing off.
I'd like to see a way to hook into the systems
so the old folks at home could sit and watch life going on.
So long as it is kept in public places only, I'm for it.
Technology marches on.
