Are they just "trigger-happy mercenaries?" That's the allegation Blackwater USA chief Erik Prince contested yesterday before Congress. The inquest has received increased attention because of a recent incident in Iraq in which Blackwater operatives shot 11 Iraqi civilians, suggesting that Blackwater is unconcerned with civilian deaths and prone to "shoot first." Congressional inquirers also attacked Blackwater for an aviation crash in Afghanistan that killed U.S. service members and for an incident during which a Blackwater guard shot a bodyguard of one of Iraq's vice-presidents. Mr. Prince adamantly defended his company's record, stating that 30 Blackwater members have died defending US diplomats, while none of their charges have been killed. For Congress, significant questions still remain as to the advisability of "outsourcing" U.S. security tasks to a private firm.
