Bee Business Model

Newspaper current event by Brandon on 21 April 2006, tagged as ecology, business, and communication

Bees have been known to 'waggle-dance' in order to communicate the location of food to the swarm, but scientists recently discovered they do a different kind of waggling to help find a new home. The interaction between the scouts and the swarm involves principles of an open forum of ideas, frank 'discussions' and friendly competition, leading the researchers to conclude it to be 'a striking example of decision making by an animal group that is complicated enough to rival the dealings of any department committee ... The bees' method, which is a product of disagreement and contest rather than consensus or compromise, consistently yields excellent collective decisions.'

The communication, which almost always leads to the best new home, is fundamentally simple. When a hive gets too crowded, its queen and half the hive will swarm to a nearby tree and quietly wait while several hundred scouts go house hunting. The scouts return and report on their findings through dance - the better the housing site, the stronger the waggle dance. Strong dances attract other scouts who follow the first bee to the home cadidate, and the growing quorum returns and reports in the same manner. When a quorum reaches 15 bees, the scouts signal to the waiting bees in the swarm that it's time to warm up their flight muscles in preparation for takeoff, and the swarm moves to its new home.

Flame-bait / Troll by starm_ :: NR0 :: on 21 April 2006

Where's the mod for news? This is a shamless, flame-baiting, creationist plug.

I'm gonna bite the troll hook and refer readers to bootstrapping. (all languages are learned and evolve using bootstrapping)

Yes, I agree; it is "sham-less." Seriously, though, I'm having a difficult time seeing anything even remotely flame-baiting or creationist about the post. The complexity of the communication is not meant as a plug for anything; it's just interesting.

The conclusion of your little www.answersingenesis.org plug is:

Such complicated communication seems impossible to explain if you believe bees and their language have evolved.

I have to admit, I had no idea that first link was to a religiously-oriented site. It was simply the first place I found with a decent explanation of how the bees dance to explain the location of food. That's what I get for not reading the page subtitle or the last paragraph of the article.

If you'd rather, refer to NOVA for a purely scientific explanation of the food-locating bee dance.

They're Breakdance-Fighting! by VnutZ :: NR8 :: on 22 April 2006

Could you imagine members of the Bush administration doing all kinds of dances in the oval office to determine the direction of our nation? I can see Condoleeza Rice breaking out some disco moves against Donald Rumsfeld's breakdancing over foreign policy while Dubya does a little Texas two-step in the background.
