Astronomers recently upped the odds of asteroid 2007 WD5's impact with Mars as 1 in 75. The asteroid is calculated to be equivalent in size and destructiveness to the object that impacted Siberia in 1908, known as the Tunguska event. It has been years since astronomers were able to witness such a cosmic collision, the last being the extraordinary impact of the Shoemaker Levy 9 comet on Jupiter. 2007 WD5's collision is anticipated for January.

I had observed the effects of the Shoemaker Levy 9 impacts on Jupiter. I was using only a 3-inch reflector but the dark spots left behind were very distinct. Here is something about asteroid impacts that might interest readers here:
