Aristotle and Emerson: Not So Strange Bedfellows

Newspaper current event by willwaddell on 12 September 2004, tagged as philosophy

How can America maintain a feasible moral code when it would appear that the Enlightenment has dealt a series of inadvertent deathblows to any functioning ethical system? In this piece of fine scholarship Andy Scott attempts to bolster morality based on an Aristotelian system as expressed through the philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Though not without controversy, this essay should, at the very least, set the mind to work on those things that could very well unravel our fragile societal experiment. I believe this is something worth the read…and the subsequent thought. Enjoy.
