An Inconvenient Court Ruling

Newspaper current event by LordDilly on 22 October 2007, tagged as an inconvenient truth, global warming, al gore, and education

Al Gore's Oscar winning film ''An Inconvenient Truth" is politically partisan and contains nine scientific errors, British High Court Judge Michael Burton ruled in a suit brought by Stewart Dimmock, a part-time school governor in Kent. Mr. Dimmock sought an injunction against having the film shown to school children on the basis the film was too inaccurate and full of political bias. While agreeing the film is "broadly accurate," and "climate change is mainly attributable to man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide ('greenhouse gases')," Judge Burton said some of the claims were wrong and in "the context of alarmism and exaggeration." The judge recommended the film be shown in U.K. schools only if accompanied with written guidance to teachers designed to prevent Gore's views from being promoted uncritically to children.

The nine scientific errors identified by Judge Burton include claiming:

  • the sea levels would rise by 20ft in "the near future"
  • atolls in the Pacific had already been evacuated
  • two graphs showing carbon dioxide levels and temperatures over the last 650,000 years were an "exact fit"
  • the Gulf Stream that warms up the Atlantic ocean would shut down
  • the drying of Lake Chad
  • the loss of Mount Kilimanjaro’s snows
  • the cause of Hurricane Katrina
  • polar bears were drowning while searching for icy habitats melted by global warming
  • coral bleaching is attributed to climate change

"In your face, Al!," reportedly shouted Judge Burton. "I can't take your liberal alarmist tone anymore. Ever since the great Silent Spring and Feminist debacles, you atheist, godless liberal creatures have caused more harm than good. Even if true, global warming would make the British Isles an attractive beach destination. I, for one, will enjoy saving money while sunbathing in Cornwall instead of Aruba."

In related news, the UK Government also told the larger public they should probably exercise caution when watching TV or reading books/newspapers/websites. "Do not believe everything you read and or see," said the British prime-minister, rolling his eyes. "Use some common-sense, folks. Take everything with a grain of salt." The British Government went on to provide an itemized list of things are probably not 100% accurate or honest, and may contain factual errors:

- smoking cigarettes does not make women want you;

- drinking beer does not make hot women have sex in your backyard;

- politicians use patriotic symbols extensively to avoid discussing real issues;

- mentions of religion in political speeches are not truly honest, politicians are just after your votes.

- buying $175 nike air max shoes would not make you run like Marion Jones (performance enhancing drugs might, but don't count on it).
