Big Brother Is Watching!

Cup blog (coffee shop) by smcbride on 28 January 2008, tagged as government

George Orwell's novel 1984 was written in 1948. This brilliant novel was a senior English "must read" when I attended high school. At the time, technology was very limited and 1984 seemed like only a futuristic fiction. On the other hand, today we see similar technological abilities in traffic monitoring, shopping center parking lot security, ... Read this and 11 comments.

How Much of Written History Is True?

Cup blog (coffee shop) by smcbride on 03 June 2007, tagged as history

Just because it is written doesn't make it true. History is traditionally written by the victor, who bends the truth. Nearly every event in the past has at least two sides to the story, depending on who you ask. Is there truth in written history, or is it just written opinions which change with ... Future Of Computing, where do you think it headed?

Cup blog (coffee shop) by smcbride on 24 June 2007, tagged as computing

I would like to start a general coffee shop discussion about where you think computing is headed in the next ten years. Will A.I. take command of humans anytime in the near future? Here is a very interesting link that I ran across that simply blows my mind. ... Read this and 9 comments.

Growing Old Is a Privilege, Not a Disease

Cup blog (coffee shop) by smcbride on 23 March 2007, tagged as sociology and family

My job as a firefighter paramedic takes me to old folks homes nearly every shift I work. I see cases of abuse against the elderly on a regular basis. Studies have shown that elderly abuse is a growing trend, rising almost twice as fast as child abuse. This should be a great concern to all of ... Read this and 16 comments.

Random Drug Screening For Welfare Recipients

Cup blog (coffee shop) by smcbride on 07 January 2007, tagged as economics

I have a job, and I work very hard for my pay. To retain my job, I am required to pass a random drug test. Personally, I have no problem with the test, but I do have a problem with my tax dollars being distributed to those who aren't required to be tested in order to get their public assistance checks. I have no problem with helping those in need, but I do have a problem helping young healthy people sit around drinking wine while I am at work. So, why aren't welfare recipients required to pass ... Consequencs of the Lack of or Use of Nuclear Weapons

Cup blog (coffee shop) by smcbride on 07 January 2007, tagged as worldaffairs

Hypothetically speaking, if Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Pakistan, Afghanistan or any other county had the high tech weapons capabilities that the U.S. currently possess, and the United States had none, how long would North America stand? Would any of these countries use their "super power?" What would happen if U.S. took off its gloves and launched an unmeasured attack on a strategic location in Middle-East? Might it have the same affect on that conflict that it did on World War ... Read this and 16 comments.
