It’s violent fundamentalism that we need to be worried about, not religion in general.

In counter terrorism terms perhaps, but in the USA mainstream religion can have an insidious effect on the democratic process.

Such as compulsion to teach Intelligent Design in schools. Influencing the President on critical bills, and so on.
