Mogadishu Battle Rages On

The embattled country of Somalia remains a dangerous and deadly place today. Intense fighting around the capital of Mogadishu has claimed at least 130 lives, mostly civilians. Reports indicate that the northern Sii-Sii neighborhood of Mogadishu was battered by artillery and mortar fire in this ongoing clash between the Transitional National Government (TNG) and a conglomeration of Islamic fighters known as the Islamic Court Union. The TNG, despite its impressive title, is an alliance of warlords and currently controls only a portion of the Somali capital. In this contest the Islamic Court Union has implied that it can bring peace and order to the thoroughly divided country and has presented the transitional government as puppets of the United States. Somalia has had no functioning central government since 1991 and continues to see the proliferation of ‘break-away’ polities. Some, however, have argued that Somalia functions along the lines of Anarcho-capitalism.
