I think that the feats of arms of the Confederate Army were highly creditable in terms of heroism and military professionalism. They definitely deserve to be remembered and honored. The question is: is it healthy for the modern USA to honor them separately from all the other servicemen in all our wars. I think not. We are a Union.
They were fighting for states rights, but unfortunately one of those rights was the right to enslave black people. They were totally wrong about that.
I think they were an idea whose time had come and gone. The Confederacy could not have survived much longer into the modern era with such a backward outlook even if it had won the war. Essentially, they were conservatives, and conservatism will always lose out to progressive ism because it lacks new ideas and the incentive to improve.
