Here’s my take: families should be off limits during political campaigns — until they begin running their mouths in an official campaign capacity.

That makes sense to me. You can’t get up at the podium and work for the campaign yet claim some form of scrutiny immunity the next moment. Once you begin to participate in an arena like that, you’re all in.

Regardless of whether a spouse has integrated themselves into the process, I don’t think they are particularly relevant to the office itself. Sure, there are always folks that are heavily influenced by their spouses. But if that’s a significant enough influence on everything that tells me the forerunner is too weak to be a leader and the spouse should be the candidate.
