Nice article Mark. I wonder what it would be like to actually have a candidate ward off all the negative mud-slinging from his opponent at a debate and answer questions straight-up. Could you imagine if Bush, everytime Kerry made a negative comment, just took it, restated what he will continue to do in office, and then end it with a nice remark about how he wonders if his opponent will take a stand on anything? That would be true leadership at its finest. Could you imagine if ALL of Bush’s (or Kerry’s) TV/Radio ads talked about the positives that they plan to do for the Country if elected? I think in this day and age that it would be quite unique and stand out in my mind. I agree though that there does need to be some negative points about either opponent brought to light, but I think that a "take a stand" tactic could be quite impressive, especially to the American public that actually cares and uses their intelligence to make a carefully wagered vote.

a "take a stand" tactic could be quite impressive, especially to the American public that actually cares and uses their intelligence to make a carefully wagered vote. Sure, but to everyone else, they would continually hear "candidate 2" bash "candidate 1". So then the voter is thinking, "Hmmm candidate 1 says that he’ll do all this great stuff, but I sure have heard a lot of bad stuff about candidate 1 too. Come to think of it, I haven’t heard anything bad about candidate 2, guess I’ll go with him!" Somehow the fact that that candidate 1 is on the up and up and is actually addressing what ought to be is overlooked. I think for this to be effective on a large scale (and not for just those who actually put thought into who they are voting for) either both candidates would have to appeal to this sort of campaign and let it come out in the wash, or candidate 1 would have to somehow show the american people that they are not bashing like their opponent so often does, which is in itself a form of bashing. I like Mark’s idea of dissallowing it across the board. Call me crazy!
