RE: What part of "Illegal" Immigration Don't They Get?

I think that they are tolerated because they are the backbone of the Californian economy.

They are willing (desperate enough) to do jobs that we refuse to do.

Employers want to pay wages that would be illegal for a citizen, and to give them sub standard working conditions – they want workers who they can exploit without fear of retribution from the justice system.

We treat black citizens in the Missippi Delta in much the same manner.

That should be "refuse to do for slave wages." I’d like to remind everyone that a few months ago a construction company (or contractors, I forget) was busted for knowingly hiring illegals— at like $80,000 a year (or more!)

You are generally correct, though, which makes me wonder at the motives behind all of the pro-illegal immigration people. It’s obvious that they don’t really give a rat’s ass about these people. it seems to me as if they really just want cheap, disposable labor.

LordDilly beat me to the punch a bit with a rejoinder to this—I agree in part with your assessment that greedy employers want—and perceive that they NEED—this cheap labor to survive. However, as Dilly pointed out, does this mean that the pro-illegal immigration people acknowledge and condone slave labor with a wink and a nod, or do they believe that their movement is genuinely compassionate? If the latter, I have to wonder how they come to that conclusion, given that these people are often exploited, most will not report crimes committed against them, and the unfair access to certain groups (i.e. those that live in adjacent countries) versus those who are in even more desperate straits elsewhere. Are these self-styled "pro-immigrant" groups being duped, a cynical part of the problem, or are they just naive?

We treat black citizens in the Missippi Delta in much the same manner.

Huh?! Do you mean "we" used to treat them this way, or currently? If currently, then how is this happening with minimum wage laws and all the other protections afforded by above-the-table employment?
