Islam was indeed initially propagated by the sword. That is not an opinion but an historical fact.

What the Muslims seem to not understand about their prophet is that he was a general of large armies that laid sieges to major cities (Medina and Mecca) and took them with great bloodshed. This information places the Pope’s comments into proper perspective.
