RE: Searching for the next Wall
Let me ask a few questions myself:
Why are there so many illegal immigrants? Who is hiring them? Why? Why aren’t there illegal immigrants in the IT sector? Why should America favor the IT sector vs the farm sector?
I am equally ignorant, but is (illegal) immigration a problem? Maybe at the state level. Or not. Illegal immigrants come to this country, earn money, and they spend most of it here, paying taxes every time they make a purchase, hence financing to a certain degree the expenses.
What can the (federal) government do?
1) take no action (i.e. let’s just close our eyes and hope this will all blow over)
2) errect serious barriers to entry
3) bring everything in the white and let employers assume responsibility for the hiring of immigrants
As far as cheaper labor is concerned – let the free market forces speak for themselves.
The Economist has a splendid article on immigration issues. What makes sense economically might not make sense politically, and let us not forget a few favorite American scares from the recent past: Alcohol Scare, Red Scare, Japanese Scare, Outsourcing Scare. How does Immigration Scare sound?

I could be wrong, but I do believe that illegal immigrants actually send most of their money back home, spending as little of it here as possible.
