Jesus wasn’t even born in December. Christmas is originally a Pagan celebration. …..
The date is irrelevant. It was an arbitrary decision of the church (probably the Catholics) to celebrate His birth on that day. So what?
Are you really so shocked by this. It is only a celebration. A party is usually held at a convenient time. Yours is only one of many views on the actual month. Who knows? Who cares?
It was normal practice in ancient times to convert the festivities of conquered people to new ones favoring the new regime, but to keep them on the same dates.
The Christians did not really get their act together for about 400 years after Jesus. Even then, it was mainly due to pressure from a Roman emperor, Constantine, who hoped it might restore some strength to his crumbling empire.
The Christmas story was invented by Matthew in order to fulfill some Jewish prophesies. Probably none of it is true. The churches know this, but it is still useful for them to encourage religious devotion at any time, and this is a good one for children and families. It serves its purpose well.
I think it was American marketing men who came up with the idea of making it a retail festival. When everyone is feeling good, and full of love we can con them into buying gifts for each other: why not make a buck out of it?
Christmas provides a means for making a profit from two very strong human emotions: parental love, and religious sentimentality.
