what everyone needs to realize is that we have a thing called “human nature,” which is competitive and violent. we have failed when we thought that we could live in a utopia. all the utopias failed, including hippie coops. communism always fails. socialism is an ideal and is not a truthful state of living. it is a little bridge between capitalism and communism. we hear stories about “socialism” being the answer to all our troubles, but how could it be? given human nature, it cannot.

how would we be behind the rest of the world? those that we would not be caught up with are the maniacs that don’t follow any rules of civil responsibility to you or to me—the criminals. they are following their human nature, they want to be at the top of the hill. that’s the way people are. so, should you allow yourself to be hurt or killed by them?

the dinosaurs ruled the earth without society for what? 250,000 years? a long, long time. do you know how long hominids have lived in any type of society? only 50,000 years, including the time of the caveman. is our BEHAVIOR more civilized than that of the caveman? no, it is not.

we are more emotional than you know. having watched how people act for 26 years (due to my career), i see how little logic we have. we may have 1% logic. so if there are people that will club you in the noggin to grasp at that almighty goal up there, i.e., the money and the power (over you, over me, over anyone that they can enslave) and to steal that which you have worked for, what will you do? how will you protect yourself?

the only way is self sufficiency. and to me that means that i want to be armed, in my home and in public. (oh, btw, i was raped twice. if i had a gun, you know i would not have been).

please explain who we will we be behind, who is the superior person to you and to me. i do not understand, via my human nature. thank you.

You are cynical, in the manner of a conservative radio commentator, but I will assume that you are being sincere.

Of course modern humans are much more civilized than their predecessors. Great strides were taken in Europe during the age of enlightenment and they were developed by the founders of the United States. It is civilized to understand that all human life is precious even if it comes in the form of a shitbag who is trying to rob you. Most other countries have managed to appreciate this better we have. Google capital punishment statistics by country to see what I mean.

You are correct that there is a strong competitive streak in human nature but “civilized” countries have learned to control it in ways that restrain it to what is socially acceptable. We do not live in a totally Darwinian survival society, and we should resist any pressures pushing us in that direction.

You should have a read of Socrates, Shakespeare, Acquinas, and Voltaire and then try to make the case that there is no good in human nature. Try reading the current Virtue Ethics ON thread again.

I am truly saddened to hear that you were raped. That is tragic and unforgivable, but it might have been your murder if you had tried to defend yourself with a gun. Think about that, and be realistic: try not to write the script as you would have wanted it to happen.

If you kill with a gun to stop someone from stealing from you you might discover that the law is not very sympathetic. You would probably be charged with manslaughter/murder 3, and results show that even if you beat the charge it will cost on average more than $100k in legal fees and other costs.

If you want to be anonymous you should capitalize at least the perpendicular pronoun.
