You have completely misunderstood my point.

I was not implying that the soldiers are in danger from the officer himself.

My experience is Navy where a lot of young sailors live together with a few old hands. All are frustrated from long periods away from women.

Sometimes they start having sex with each other and without being too discrete about it. The old hands tell them this is normal practice in the Navy and they had better get used to it. Their NCOs may tell them that the senior sailors have a right to expect it from the new sailors.

So then one of the newbys gets up the guts to discuss it with his divisional officer. I think he has a right to be talking to someone who is outraged by this behavior and who will tell him it is not normal, is completely unacceptable, and is against the traditions of the service.

It would not make any difference if all or some of the sailors or officers were female and the sex was heterosexual and consensual.

So are you implying that a gay divisional officer would not be outraged, tell him it is normal, is acceptable, and is in the traditions of the service?

I think the beef here is with dirtbag officers, not gay/straight officers.

I don’t know what Navy you were in, but this certainly did not happen in my command. Anyone who was even suspected of homosexual behavior was immediately Captain’s masted and discharged for ‘the good of the Navy’.

In the US Navy during my tenure in the 1980’s, there was a simple policy..if you’re gay you’re gone.
