RE: No sir?

I don’t even know where to start. I think that there is still a pervasive idea that gay men all have an underlying deviance. There are plenty of young female officers that have male soldiers. Are they unqualified to give advice to the men in their charge? Same for male leaders that are in charge of female soldiers. You could use your same ‘conflicted situation’ argument for both of those situations.

I know someone will probably counter with ‘well, neither of those situations involve the officer living in barracks with them.’ To that I say ‘get over it.’ I think there is far more compelling evidence to restrict male leaders from being in charge of female soldiers. What is it that you are afraid of that is more dangerous than that? Should male soldiers be barred from the service because they regularly rape and assault female soldiers?

RE: No sir? by Occams

You have completely misunderstood my point.

I was not implying that the soldiers are in danger from the officer himself.

My experience is Navy where a lot of young sailors live together with a few old hands. All are frustrated from long periods away from women.

Sometimes they start having sex with each other and without being too discrete about it. The old hands tell them this is normal practice in the Navy and they had better get used to it. Their NCOs may tell them that the senior sailors have a right to expect it from the new sailors.

So then one of the newbys gets up the guts to discuss it with his divisional officer. I think he has a right to be talking to someone who is outraged by this behavior and who will tell him it is not normal, is completely unacceptable, and is against the traditions of the service.

It would not make any difference if all or some of the sailors or officers were female and the sex was heterosexual and consensual.
