I have the exact same problem except my unit is only about 4 years old. But I don’t know anyone with the fence so I can test the collar. Actually, as I think about it, I have 2 collars and I did test both collars. So it must be the sending unit. I wonder if I could just put a little amplifier on the wire to increase the signal strength. Even when the unit worked good the collar had to be withing about 3 feet of the wire to respond.
I am having a very similar issue with a weak signal. I also have two collars and I have to hover both of them about 6 inches from the wire to get them to beep. This is even with the signal dial ALLTHEWAY UP. Because both collars are behaving the same, I must assume then that the problem is the transmitter. Is it common for the transmitters to go bad? I recently had to splice into the original wire to route around some new flower boxes, but I used the gel filled connectors right from Petsafe. All was working fine after I reran everything. Then about 3 weeks later, I noticed that my dogs were able to get into the flower beds and dig like crazy. HELP!!!
Could be lightning effect, possibly damaged the transmitter. And/or, the obvious concerne about the quality of the wire splice. Isn’t the Invisible Fence product covered with a lifelong warranty? Call your local office. BTW, did you see they have a new, smaller collar?
