There is NO WAY you burned over 600 calories during 40 minutes of weightlifting. You probably burned about 125 to 175 at the MOST depending on how intense and how much resting was taking place. Weight lifting isnt a cardio activity. You would have to run/jog at a decent pace for an hour to burn 660 calories. Youre data is way off at least on the weightlifting…
Ummm … dude. You burn 80 calories an hour just sitting in a chair. If you only burn 200 calories lifting weights, then you have one laaaaaazzzzy ass lifting routine.
With all due respect, that is spoken like someone who has never done serious compound weightlifting (not the high rep bodybuilding stuff – I’m talking squats, power cleans, bench, C&J, etc.). There’s a reason people are sweating bullets and panting for breath after heavy lifts, and it’s not because no cardio’s involved. Any look at a sight about heavy weightlifting (I prefer stronglifts and t-nation) will tell you that there is indeed cardio work. While it’s not the same as HIIT, it does work your heart considerably. Look at some of the weightlifters at the olympics – they lift huge and some of them are small dudes putting 2x plus their body weight over their heads. Plus, they look like their carved from wood; definately an effect of the amount of calories burned by weightlifting. Furthermore, weightlifting has a heavy thermic effect meaning you’re burning more calories at rest to maintain muscle than when you’re not lifting heavy weights.
While I don’t think you’re burning 600 calories (unless you’re a really big guy – like over 220 lifting really big weights), it probably falls more into the 300-450 range somewhere (there are many variables). Regardless, it’s still nothing to thumb your nose at.
Anyways, keep up the work, but remember, it’s ultimately not about losing the weight but losing the fat!
