So I just drove down the hill (and back up) to drop my wife off for EMT duty during the snowstorm. She figured putting an extra crew out there would serve more people though finding available members was difficult.
Not for nothing … but the only American vehicles that were successfully getting anywhere on the hill (vertical elevation roughly 400 feet from bottom) were 4×4 pick-ups and my Jeep. All the P.O.S. sedans and SUV’s were stuck at the bottom or slipping to the sides. And my upstairs neighbor just told me about how people were driving on the NY Thruway and NJ Turnpike from his commute back from NYC – crazy fast with accidents and sliding everywhere as if their vehicles were going to take care of it for them. Other than the 4×4′s, only the German sedans and their AWD with traction control were having no problems.
If it’s not a truck, Detroit produces useless, crappy passenger cars.

I presume that is because we make lowest common denominator cars that the executives believe are likely to return the greatest profit to the manufacturers.
Americans prefer size to quality – look at our junk food – or even restaurant portions.
We like our cars to be comfortable, even if it means having a suspension that is too soft for safety under difficult conditions. Safety? Seat belts are a conspiracy against freedom! Even the police mostly use family cruisers that are unsuited to pursuit work.
The Europeans place a premium on performance and safety and are prepared to pay for it. Size is a nuisance in their environment. So they get much better vehicles.
The Asians will make anything but they learn quickly and have a good eye for quality.
Over the last twenty years there has been a shift here to smaller better performing cars but our manufacturers haven’t learned and the profits have gone to European and Asian manufacturers.
We get the cars we deserve. So, buy European cars and give our manufacturers the profits that they deserve.
