Perhaps the most prolific ‘werewolf’ in history is the Beast of Gévaudan that terrorised the south of France for three years in the eighteenth century.

Whether in fact it was a plain wolf, an anomalous wolf or a maniac with a furry outfit continues to be a point of much discussion. Either way, many aspects of the story were well documented by contemporaries, and make interesting reading today.
