Wow! Two great film clips you have there Anon. Lots of truth, lets just pray we are not following the foot steps of Rome. Great men, great quotes, thanks for sharing link, I enjoyed them both.
I’d like to point out – not a single one of those quotes is essentially Christian in nature. Very many of them were taken from men who were deists, and who thought Christianity to be false.
The very first image in the video is of the statue of Jefferson in his memorial. The inscription surrounding him is a famous one – it says, "I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." Many people see the word "God" and assume he meant the Christian god – as that whole video prompts them to do.
But the actual quote is from a letter he wrote to his friend Benjamin Rush, after Rush had written him to warn him that the clergy of the Danbury Baptist church in Philadelphia had been attacking him. Here’s the actual context:
The returning good sense of our country threatens abortion to their hopes, & they [the clergy] believe that any portion of power confided to me, will be exerted in opposition to their schemes. And they believe rightly; for I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. But this is all they have to fear from me: & enough too in their opinion, & this is the cause of their printing lying pamphlets against me…
The specific tyranny he had in mind when he made that famous quote was the tyranny exercised by the clergy over their followers.
Jefferson was known to have edited the gospels to delete the miracles and mysticism, leaving what he thought the "true" teachings of Jesus were. He had zero belief that Jesus "died for our sins" or rose from the dead.
In fact, many (if not most) of the men quoted in the video were very stalwart defenders of the idea that religion had no place in the public square. They specifically put it in the constitution as the very first of the bill of rights.
Videos like that are disgusting. They use patriotism as a disguise to subvert American ideals. Patriots believe in keeping the church and the state separate. Patriots like Jefferson, Washington, Madison, Franklin, Adams, and Lincoln – not a single one of whom can be shown to have held Christian beliefs.
The people who put together this movie are not patriots. They do not stand for American ideals. They’ve invented an independent set of religious ideals and seek to force those on America. They’re an insidious, anti-American counter culture.
