what's up with superman?

I can understand that batman is all dark, but what most interets me is the take on Superman. So in this book he’s just kind of a total tool of America? It’s funny how the good ole fashioned Superman is getting polarized. In DRK he’s completely American, but in the negative sense of being sort of a super-Big Brother. Then in the new Superman movie he’s not American at all. It seems that the screenwriters decided that Superman’s traditional motto: "Truth, Justice and the American Way" doesn’t work anymore. They intentionally excluded that in order to make him an ‘international hero.’ So my question is what is wrong with Superman? Why does everyone feel it necessary to make him over?

Thread verbosity:

Yes….I have another question about these super heroes. Why do they wear tights with their underwear outside?

In DKR, Superman is still essentially the same Superman he’s always been. He still saves lives- even taking a nuke in the breadbasket. Having him be a government agent makes sense in the context of the story- in the brief description of past events we are told of how humans began to get suspicious of costumed humans, so Supes went to work for Uncle Sam in exchange for amnesty for the rest of the super folk.

As for the movie- Hollywood still doesn’t get it. Most Americans love America, but Hollywood types insist on seeing things through the prism of their multicultural PC lens, so they assume that the rest of the country is "international" as well. By insisting on making Superman "international", they are missing the huge point that Superman himself could very easily be a symbol for America: Supes is an immigrant (if you will)- America is made up of immigrants and the descendants of immigrants; Superman is the most powerful being on Earth, but he doesn’t use his power to rule, but to help- as is with America. Of course Hollywood doesn’t see America in those terms. And let’s not forget the all-powerful buck: they wouldn’t want to offend movie goers in Turkey with "Truth, Justice, and the American way."

Another aspect of the Superman symbolism the movie waylaid is his parallels to Jesus. Only son, sent to Earth to save mankind, and in the comic, died saving the world and was resurrected. In the movie (WARNING!!! SPOILER FOLLOWS!! SPOILER FOLLOWS!!!) we find out that Lois Lane has had his son out of wedlock (which immediately made me think of Mallrats—see below) which is kind of Christ-like— if you take the Da Vinci Code seriously.

OBLIGATORY MALLRATS QUOTE:
T.S.: But they’re engaged.

Brodie: Doesn’t matter, can’t happen.

T.S.: Why not? It’s bound to come up.

Brodie: It’s impossible, Lois could never have Superman’s baby. Do you think her fallopian tubes could handle the sperm? I guarantee you he blows a load like a shotgun right through her back. What about her womb? Do you think it’s strong enough to carry her child?

T.S.: Sure, why not?

Brodie: He’s an alien, for Christ sake. His Kyrptonian biological makeup is enhanced by earth’s yellow sun. If Lois gets a tan the kid could kick right through her stomach. Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his kid. The only way he could bang regular chicks is with a kryptonite condom. That would kill him!
