As an MD I should inform all the father-to-be about this study: Father’s Age Linked to Risk of Schizophrenia. It’s not good to became father too early (because of deficiency of social maturity), but postponing it may also be hazardous. An accumulation of mutations in reproductive cells concerns both males and females, but in general only age of females is mentioned as a risk factor for different congenital defects (e.g. Down syndrome).
As a family therapist, I find it extremely interesting that an MD has missed out on the fact that the greatest contributer to schizophrenia is socioeconomic factors, not the fathers age. While it has been suggested that a fathers age may contribute, those test have yet to be confirmed. At this point it’s little more than a theory. Read up on Bowen and let me know what you think about schizophrenia treatments and causes. I think you were just trying to point out there are multiple risks, but there’s probably a reason why this particular contributing factor is mentioned so seldom.
