Well, if you think this is awesome, I am sure that 'beef extract' is just a glorified name for 'beef broth'. Get a Mr. Beer and make a batch, simply adding in the beef broth for some of the water.
On second thought, I would suggest owning a Mr. Beer whether you have a dog or not (I love mine). It is all the fun of making beer, with out all the wort making smell buggering up your apartment. If you have a larger place, the Mr. Beer is still a good place to start, you can progress to bigger things later.
