You miss the fact that there is a lot of music out there under the "pop" genre umbrella that isn't popular at all. Much of this is due to the monopoly record companies have on publicity; if people don't know about a band, they can't buy their stuff, no matter how much they would have liked to. The Internet stands to change this by allowing individuals to find music on their own without depending on the band being popular enough to warrant a distribution to their neck of the woods.
eMusic is a perfect example - one that I have used to discover many artists on the Indie Rock scene that have probably never been through Houston in concert and don't have CDs at Best Buy (not that I'd want to spend $10 to buy an album there, anyway).
