Tobacco Company Mischief

Comment comment by Anonymous on 28 March 2008

Well I see that big tobacco hasn't given up playing games with issues related to smoking. They financed and re-worded several studies that downplayed the dangers of secondhand smoke a few years ago. Now I see that they're trying to trick smokers into believeing that they can keep smoking because expensive scans will supposedly detect lung cancer early. No researcher with any scruples would take money from a tobacco company for any research related to smoking or any issue related to tobacco. There must be much more scrutiny into who is actually involved in any issue that could affect big business. Those with an interest in the outcome should not be involved in the study in any way.

I don't know a lot about how these research projects are usually financed, but this one had a some funny things about it. According to many articles written about it, a foundation under the guise of a charity was set up (Foundation for Lung Cancer: Early Detection, Prevention & Treatment.) with the lead doctor, Henschke as its president along with other doctors of the college filling in various positions on the board including the dean of the college Dr. Antonio Gotto Jr. as one of the directors. The "charity" was then almost completely funded over time by the 3.6 million from the Liggett Vector Group. I don't think anything was illegal, but the whole thing definitely has a sort of "hokey" feel about it.
