RE: Policy of non-intervention

Comment comment by Occams on 29 December 2007

Pakistan was our best bet for creating a stable democracy in that part of the world. With that country stabilised we would have had more chance to bring the same kind of order to Afghanistan and Iraq, which are much more difficult cases.

Instead, we backed the military dictator in Pakistan and attacked Afghanistan and Iraq. It never pays to side with a general who is governing with the support of the military but not his people. The USA should have learned that lesson after the many times it has made this mistake.

Ron Paul's policy would cause Pakistan to become a failed state, but one with a nuclear arsenal and a huge heroin resource. Just what that part of the world needs to bring on the war that will destroy us. It is the kind of dumb populist policy required to win over the ignorant masses that you need when running for President in the USA. I think he really has more sense than that but has to act dumb for the campaign.

My impression from the news coverage of this issue was the U.S. supported Bhutto.
