Normally I shoot with a Nikon F5 ... but I didn't want to deal with film out here. So I bought the Nikon D70 before deployment. Also, I didn't want to get my "good" lens scratched up with dust and sand so these were shot on a Sigma 28-210mm zoom. Generally, I keep the aperature as wide open as possible for two reasons:
1) You get increased depth of field, but you have to be faster on focusing because the DOF is so shallow.
2) You get faster shutter speeds which helps for sharp images when bouncing in a HMMWV!
All in all, I also brought with me a UV filter for the lens because they're cheap, protect your main lens element from damage, and there's a LOT of UV radiation out here. A polarizing filter wasn't used on these, but I do have one which will make more dramatic skies and cut the glare when shooting through windows. Lastly, a D-clip to hook my camera direclty to my body armor rather than have it swinging free on a shoulder sling.

Camera?
Matt, what sort of camerea did you use for these photos? ...external lens? I really like the depth in the image of the men pushing the truck, but my cheap digital camera doesn't offer anything in the way of focusing like that.
