Upgrading to IP Version 6

Mark mentioned IP version 6 in his article (which I enjoyed). Does anyone know how that will affect existing hardware? Is the change over to 6 going to require old network cards and cable routers to be replaced, or is this more of a software upgrade?

Also, I've read that some Internet segments are already using 6. Is this an upgrade I can do in my house now, or is it something that my ISP will direct?
