I think that with the ridiculous rates of divorce in this country(U.S.) not to mention the horrific pain of the divorce process when separating from someone you are not suited to, a temporary marriage situation negotiated between the two parties along with clearly defined guidelines (pre/post nuptuals) would actually help to prolong relationships by giving both parties the freedom they need to find the right person to settle down with rather than settling for a relationship that can develop into a destructive trap.

long term commitment should be a voluntary endeavor, not a trap that shuts when the "I DO"s are spoken.

Yep. The problem in this country isn't with divorce, it's with marriage. People marry who shouldn't.

The conservative among us might say that's encouraged by "easy divorce" - but I'd say it's encouraged even more by "easy marriage". With a substantial tax break for married couples, and social stigmae attached to cohabitation or other non-traditional relationships, people are pushed towards marriage. It's no wonder they want easier divorce laws.
