Regulating morality
It is rather unfortunate that people don't have the courage to admit they are human beings and it is ok to drink and engage in sexual activities within certain limits.
Across cultures, I find the various restrictions placed on certain behaviours rather disturbing. It used to be sexual behavior everywhere. It used to be drinking alcohol in the States during Prohibition.
From my observations as a foreigner in the US, I find it amusing that most Americans discuss sex rather openly, yet they are appalled when folks engage in Public Display of Affection (kissing, hugging). I live in the DC area, and I can only imagine what the social norms dictate in other parts of the United States.
In retrospect, Prohibition seems ridiculous, yet it is similar to the Temporary Marriage mentioned above. It only shows why governments should keep out of one's bedroom and kitchen.
