I couldn't believe it myself when I read the article in Wired (I think it was two months ago). But here are a few background links to support it (one is a like a player's journal):
Exactly, it sounds idiotic when you use common sense. I mean seriously, virtual products are just made of codes. However, if you see it from a politician or economist point of view, it's Enlightenment. For example, how much is paper money worth. Nothing, but a piece of paper with the number '100' and some one's picture can buy you a year supply of Butter Crunch. Also, the Government can print as many paper as they want. Thus, since paper money is virtual, virtual items do indeed have a real value.

prostitution???
What the hell is in-game prostitution? And if there's so much money to be made by selling these "virtual products" why don't the MMORPG companies themselves just sell this stuff? After all since it's fake, it's an inexhaustible resource. Sounds like a gold mine to me. Is it kind of like a government just going out and printing more money? I guess its's the same...sort of.
