Amish Society

Comment comment by ldsudduth on 06 October 2006

Is it society's place to impose medical technology in order to save a life when it directly contradicts the essence of a culture?

Having lived in two states with very high Amish poplulations (Indiana and Pennsylvania), it has been my experience with these kind, generous and wonderful people that they do not shun modern medical treatment. The things they shun of 'modern' world are anything that would connect them to the world. This includes, but is not limited to: Electricity, Telephones (although you will frequently see a telephone on a pole *off* of Amish farm land for emergencies), cars (although they can hire drivers and cars); televisions and radios (some more progressive orders use battery powered versions), musical instruments. All of these things contradict the spirit of humility that they cultivate.

What they shun are things that connect them to the World, based on their interpretation of Romans 12:2.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

They farm using tried and true techniques--horse/mule but with modering equipment. While they pay the normal taxes, they will never collect Social Security Benefits, unemployment, or welfare; because they believe it to be a 'handout'.

Personally, I think this atrocity should be a huge wake up call to our society. This carnage was visited upon a group of people who harmed no one and just wanted to be left alone. I cannot think of one sane reason anyone would have for wanting to hurt such a people, other than sheer insanity or evil.

Another thing about the Amish that I hold in high regard is that their lifestyle is voluntary to each individual. The Amish at age 16 go through a period known as rumspringa, where they are freed from the strictures of their society and can drink, party, sleep around, you name it. Amazingly, 85 to 90% of the Amish teens voluntarily return to their simple, religious lifestyles. These are not a people who keep their ways by force, or coercion, or what have you, but by faith.

If they want their children to go with God, let them do it. If they want their children in a modernized hospital, let them do it. It's their choice, besides, hospitals are already crowded.......
