No Kiddin'

Comment comment by LordDilly on 04 September 2006

Opponents of the trend argue that conservative groups have created "false rumors" to scare parents about public school practices

That, or they've actually talked to kids. How many kids, who might otherwise be excellent students, have anxiety attacks before going to school because of the harassment of one or more kids whose parents either never bothered to teach them to act civilized, or were bullies themselves and thinks it's a good trait to pass on? How many kids are distracted from learning by worrying about what the other kids are wearing, or listening to? How many parents have sent off their innocent, good natured, well behaved child to kindergarten and got back a kid who is less innocent (older kids on the bus talking about sex), and less good natured and well behaved (acting like a brat to fit in)?

The movement is led by evangelical Christians who argue that their beliefs are "disallowed" in the public school environment.

Hell, more than even that, the California Ninth Court had ruled that parents have no intrinsic rights pertaining to when their kids get sex education, after some parents sued a California public school for giving kids as young as 6 a survey that asked explicit questions about things like oral sex! (Can't remember where to find the original story) Also, let's take into account stories of teachers veering from the course curriculum to rant and rave about their own political views.

If I had kids, I'd sure wanting to home school or private school.

You can go on and on about how disfunctional kids are, but that's not the real issue. These people want the school to teach mythology as fact. That's not going to happen. School needs to stick with facts and scientific theories. The harassment stuff you mention is a complete non-factor because kids need to learn how to deal with that. They're going to experience it once they leave home, so they might as well learn now. Sheltering your kids at home doesn't solve the problem. But let's face it - these parents want to teach their kids stuff that isn't academic. A public school can't allow that.
