I think the point of the experiment was not viability - but to snuff the audiophiles that believe there is some inherent special quality to the Monster cable to produce a "better sound."

Comparison vs stuff you can actually buy
This experiment is rather flawed. So what if coat hanger wire works just as well? It's not like it's a viable replacement for most people. Not only would it be difficult to route, but time has to be invested to manually manufacture the wire. (That would be an interesting article: Make your own stereo cables out of hangers.) Then there are questions about durability, reliability, safety, etc.
If they want to test how "worth it" the Monster cables are - at least from an audio quality perspective - then they need to do the same A/B comparison with cheaper wires. To get the whole picture, they need to address the string of issues I mentioned above.
