Gender mismatch NOT a long-term problem

Comment comment by Anonymous on 18 February 2008

I've heard this sort of thing before - everybody worries about the day when 100% of the society becomes male (or female, depending on the particular situation).

It doesn't seem very likely, however: well before the 'minority' gender disappears completely, it will become VERY valuable (as is common with any scarce resource). If the number of women drops below a certain point, something like 'dowrys' might make a comback, with hordes of men offering large sums of money to families, in order that they might marry the daughter. At this point having your one child be a daughter, who will ultimately bring in a LOT of money, starts to seem like an attractive option. Far more valuable than sons, who are a dime a dozen and who (given the imbalance) are unlikely to have the opportunity to carry on your genes anyway.

Poof, problem solved!
