Both occur in a web browser, which means the keyboard shortcuts will depend on your application. I assume you're using something like Safari, Firefox, or MSIE. All of these are heavily geared toward mouse usage, but you can still get around with the keyboard. For links, you should be able to tab through them on any of these and hit your spacebar to follow them. As for selecting random text in the middle of a document, the mouse is probably your best for speed, i.e., double- and tripple-clicking.
However, in Firefox, you can do the following to remain only on the keyboard:
- Visually find the text you want to copy, let's say this line.
- Hit apple-F to bring up the find bar
- Type "Find the text" ... it should match that line. If not, apple-G to cycle through matches until it does.
- Hit escape to close the find bar
- Hold down shift, and press an arrow key
- Copy away!
... should be a similar process for other browsers.

I admit it. The mouse is "less effective." There, now that I've said it, I'm ready to take the next step towards freeing myself from UMD (unnecessary mouse dependence): finding out how to do stuff. I'm sure there are tons of things I could ask about, but here are the biggies:
